Once a two-person basement recording project, Broken Social Scene came to life onstage as a shadowy improvisational entity with a revolving-door roster, each concert a wholly unique experience dependent on the room, the weather, what they ate for dinner that night, and who was dropping in to play. Despite being a compilation, it has the same cohesion of a meticulously considered full length album with all the familiar euphoric highs and meditative lows. T HE EDITED PRESS RELEASE: “Toronto indie-rock collective Broken Social Scene’s Old Dead Young: B-Sides & Rarities is a career-spanning collection of B-sides, rarities, and outtakes pulled from 20 years of 7″ singles, compilations, soundtracks, and hard-to-find releases. Come back on Saturday to watch my interview with co-founder Brendan Canning, who breaks down these songs, explains what separates an A-side from an leftover, dishes on a terrible movie he scored and reveals which bandmember drives him crazy by continually putting the goddamn cheese platter in the fridge. All told, considering that these cuts span 15 years, multiple producers, studios and lineups, the whole thing holds almost together well enough to qualify as a new BSS studio album. And a couple of others are downright historic essentials. In fact, a few tracks might even knock some of those familiar numbers off your personal BSS playlist. Truth is, most of the rarities and outtakes Old Dead Young are every bit as good as anything that made the cut on their five official albums (six if you count their two Let’s Try The After EPs as one release). But this is no tossed-off, cobbled-together pile of duds and half-baked junk. Don’t let that subtitle deter you - yes, this is a compilation of musical orphans from beloved Toronto indie-rock collective Broken Social Scene.

If desired, add two or three small raw egg whites then shake again for 10-15 seconds until frothy and combined into the mixture strain into glass filled with fresh ice cubes. Shake your cocktail well: When you pour your cocktail into an old fashioned glass or a sour glass, you want a nice 1/2-inch layer of foam on top. To make it: Fill a shaker halfway with ice cubes then add tequila, triple sec and lime juice shake vigorously for 30 seconds until well mixed and chilled.See more tips on using eggs in cocktails below the recipe. If possible, use a real egg white: You can always use pasteurized liquid egg whites from a container, but the texture is not quite the same and can affect the look and taste of an authentic pisco sour. You can use any recipe for simple syrup you want, but the easiest and yummiest option is to do a basic 1:1 ratio of white sugar to water. Avoid dropping the lime in as garnish as it will also tamper with the taste. Keep the lime skin out of your drink: The skin of limes has a lot of essential oils that can be a tad too bitter and sour, and the pith (the white part) of all citrus is bitter when squeezing the lime, be sure to keep the flesh side facing down so the juice doesn't run over the lime peel.Shake Grand Marnier®, tequila and lime juice with ice in a cocktail shaker. Holding glass upside down, dip wet half delicately into the salt. Cut a thin wheel from one of the lime halves as a garnish. Cut a lime in half and rub around half of the rim of a margarita glass. The result is a citrusy, bright, easy-to-drink cocktail that pairs perfectly with a meal. Limones are actually small South American limes, similar to key limes (also known as "Peruvian lemons"). Fill a wide, shallow dish with 2-3 mm of fine salt. However, no egg whites are included and liqueur is also omitted. Use lime juice: Very tart lime juice is essential. Many recipes call for lemon juice, possibly a translation error from the Spanish word limon. An 1879 Weather Forecast from the War Department (the Farmers’ Bulletin) A weather forecast issued by the Weather Bureau on Febru19th Century Opinion of the Weather Bureau & the Emerging Science of Meteorology Note that the phrase “Weather Bureau” doesn’t appear in the publication letterhead since the name wasn’t officially used until 1891. The following image shows a weather forecast published in 1879 by the War Department in a document called the Farmers’ Bulletin. Excerpt from the Harrisburg Telegraph (Harrisburg PA, July 1, 1891) 19th Century weather map from the War Department in 1873 Clearly, the establishment of a weather forecasting agency 145 years ago required enormous faith in the emerging science of meteorology and its potential for significant advancement in the years to come. In 1870, a forecast typically sounded something like this, “Through tomorrow, probably fair with a fresh breeze,” a stark contrast to the 7 to 10 day forecasts of 2015. The forecasting agency was officially named the United States Weather Bureau.Ītmospheric prediction was in its infancy and forecasts were vaguely worded, typically covering a large area for a mere 24-hour period. On that day, the agency was changed from a military service to a civilian service, and all of the meteorological, telegraphic, and personnel assets were transferred from the Department of War to the Department of Agriculture. The transfer went into effect on July 1, 1891. After consideration by Congress, the act was passed and subsequently signed into law by President Harrison on October 1, 1890. However, President Benjamin Harrison recommended that the agency be transferred from the War Department to the Department of Agriculture. The very first meteorological reports were taken at 24 stations at 7:35 am on Novemand successfully transmitted by telegraph to the Signal Service central office in Washington, D.C.įor 20 years, the weather agency operated as a meteorological division of the Signal Service. On March 29, 1870, the new weather forecasting service was officially assigned to the U.S. The Weather Bureau, now known as the National Weather Service, was established on Februby the 41 st United States Congress and signed by President Ulysses S. This could also be a consequence of pervasive microfracturing in some samples but this might be expected to produce more variation in the data than is evident here. S-glass has a strength of 700,000 pounds per square inch (4,800 MPa) while E-glass and C-glass have a strength of 500,000 pounds per square inch (3,400 MPa). In general, the tensile strength for both sands and ‘shales’ ranges from 3 of UCS for high UCS (16,000 psi) to 810 for UCS 6000 psi. Strength of fiberglass įiberglass's strength depends on the type. This is due to the reduction of flaws in glass fibers and that glass fibers have a small cross sectional area, constraining maximum defect size ( Size effect on structural strength). This test is accomplished by placing a dumbbell shaped specimen into the grips, or jaws, of a tensometer. Glass fibers have a much higher tensile strength than regular glass (200-500 times stronger than regular glass). Tensile strength is usually measured as the amount of force in pounds per square inch (psi) or megapascals (MPa) required to pull a specimen to the point of material failure. Glass has a compressive strength of 1,000 megapascals (150,000 psi). The processes of thermal and chemical toughening can increase the tensile strength of glass. The chemical composition of the glass also impacts its tensile strength. Imperfections of the glass, such as bubbles, and in particular surface flaws, such as scratches, have a great effect on the strength of glass and decrease it even more than for other brittle materials. This high value is due to the strong chemical Si–O bonds of silicon dioxide. However, the theoretical upper bound on its strength is orders of magnitude higher: 17 gigapascals (2,500,000 psi). The suggested equations are evaluated based on R 2, RMSE, MAPE, and IAE parameters and compared with other models.Glass typically has a tensile strength of 7 megapascals (1,000 psi). It is also noticed traditional models are less fit in 7 day's strength prediction than 28 day's prediction. It is noticed that split tensile strength gaining rate is not so high in 7 days as like as compressive strength. To formulate the model, experimental data have been gathered from various literatures. The polynomial equation for 7 and 28 days have been developed for the following two cases: one is for a cylinder and adjusted cylinder any compressive strength (f`c) with w/b ratio ≥ 0.51 or a cylinder and adjusted cylinder compressive strength (f`c) ≤ 20 MPa with any w/b ratio and other is for a cylinder and adjusted cylinder compressive strength (f`c) > 20 MPa with w/b ratio < 0.51. They are mostly used in materials science, where the tensile strength of a material is measured as a large number of psi. This study represents a method predicting the split tensile strength through the compressive strength (0 to 120 MPa) of cube and cylinder specimens of concrete by polynomial regression analysis. The force per unit area (MPa or psi) required to break a material in such a manner is the ultimate tensile strength or tensile strength at break. The conversion in SI units is 1 ksi 6.895 MPa, or 1 MPa 0.145 ksi. The ability to resist breaking under tensile stress is one of the most important and widely measured properties of materials used in structural applications. In some circumstances, tensile strength is also required to analyze and design a structure. Compressive and tensile strength are important parameters to know the quality of concrete. Healing crystal meanings are spiritual supports to healing, not prescription or healthcare information. The final, and perhaps most dangerous myth, is that our own cultural identity is mainstream, i.e., many of us believe we interpret situations the same way others do. However, many of us are unaware of our own cultural identity and how it influences every single aspect of our life. The second myth I often hear is that some of us don’t have a cultural identity at all. This happens due to our exposure to new ways of thinking and as we absorb whatever resonates for us into our cultural identity. Think about some of the beliefs you had as a child that have since changed. It is dynamic and it evolves as we affiliate ourselves with different groups. The first myth is that our cultural identity is fixed, which simply isn’t true. And I find that it is critical that we identify and address these myths before my client is ready to move forward. I often encounter three big myths about cultural identity in my work with clients. The challenge arises when we become so fixated on gaining status with our groups that we fail to notice when they aren’t serving us or resist opportunities that arise. It’s natural, even necessary, for us to seek a sense of belonging and to look for cultural groups who will accept us for who we are. Humans are social animals, which means we depend on each other for survival. For example, if you were born to a family that encouraged you to go to college and pursue a career in science, you might accept this path, join the physics club, and absorb the standards of that group into your own identity. To complicate matters further, certain situations and contexts provide an additional filter that allows unique elements of your cultural identity to emerge. As your life unfolds, you may become involved with many groups including: As you have experiences or develop skills and interests, you join and leave certain communities because you have or lack commonality with their group members. Other contributions to your cultural identity occur as you navigate your life and the social constructs (aka social constructions) around you. Important parts of your cultural identity are shaped due to your affiliation with any number of groups or cultural patterns, some of which we (as a culture) assign to you at birth, such as your: Then, through our continual exposure to the group, we begin to accept these standards as part of our cultural identity. The group unconsciously develops certain standards for what is normal and acceptable based on social cues. What makes culture complicated is that many of these defining characteristics go unspoken. No matter how large or small the group, there are beliefs, norms, values, and behaviors that emerge. What Defines and Shapes a Person’s Cultural Identity?Īnytime a group of people unites toward a common objective, a culture begins to form. Our cultural identity is important because it influences how we interpret and react to such situations, which can affect how successful we are in life. This typically happens when we find ourselves in parts of the world or among groups with different cultural norms. And while there are people who progress through life without ever thinking about their cultural identity, it is something we tend to become aware of when it’s challenged. Our cultural identity can evolve, as culture is ever-evolving and dynamic. Your cultural identity is a critical piece of your personal identity (and worldview) that develops as you absorb, interpret, and adopt (or reject) the beliefs, values, behaviors, and norms of the communities in your life. We form a cultural identity when we subconsciously interpret and incorporate signals from the world around us into our own identity so we can belong. Therefore: Whereas identity is about knowing what is acceptable and true for yourself. But what is cultural identity and why does it matter?Ĭulture, in this context, refers to the beliefs, norms, behaviors, and values that a given group of people deem acceptable. This can be especially perplexing when the situation seems benign to you, but the other person has an extremely negative or positive response. If you have ever found yourself baffled by someone’s response to a situation, you have seen the effects of cultural identity.
